THE MIDLIFE EDIT PODCAST
Ghostwriters: Episode Two
The Culture
ABOUT THE CONVERSATION
Who told you that was the rule?
When did you first decide there was something wrong with your body? That wrinkles were bad? That confidence was good—but too much confidence made you intimidating? That you could be sexy, but only if it didn't look like you were trying?
You probably didn't.
Because culture never asked permission. It just started writing.
In Episode Two of Ghostwriters, Jen looks at the rules women absorb without ever consciously choosing them: how we're supposed to look, age, dress, work, parent, succeed, want, and take up space.
From diet culture and MTV to Instagram and the impossible promise of “having it all,” this episode asks a deceptively simple question:
Who wrote that rule—and do you actually want to keep it?

YOUR EDIT THIS WEEK
Says who?
Catch yourself saying:
I should.
I can't.
I'm too old.
Women my age shouldn't.
I need to ___ before I can ___.
People will think…
Then don't argue with the thought.
Just ask:
Says who?
Who wrote that rule? Was it you? Your family? A magazine you read in 1997?
An ex? Instagram? Some imaginary committee deciding what women your age are allowed to do?
And then ask yourself:
If nobody were watching,
what would I actually choose?
Because that answer might finally be your handwriting.
